How much should your new website cost?

First of all, you need to consider how munch functionality you want your website to have. Simply having an attractive design won’t mean your website costs more. In fact, out of two websites that look exactly the same, website A could cost £5000+ and website B could be a free template. The difference is in the integral workings of the website, the user experience and functionality. To determine what type of website you need, you should ask yourself a couple of things:

What is the purpose of my website?

If the purpose of your website is to generate income with little or no maintenance required by you, for example an online store or subscription to online services, this will require advanced functionality. If the purpose of your website is simply to convey your brand and provide information to trigger the customer to contact you, that’s much more simple.

How often will I need to update my website?

If your website will display pretty much the same information all year round with the odd update here and there, you’ll want a static website. If your website needs to update daily, for example a news website or a ‘recipe of the day’ type website, you’ll need a dynamic website which is the more expensive of the two.

Do I have time to write the content myself?

Most website packages will design and build the website for you, but it’s up to you to populate the pages with copy text. Copywriting is often an optional extra offered by most web designers but will cost you. If you have the time, I would always advise to write your own copy. You know your business best and you’re probably highly experienced in communicating with the type of person you’re targeting meaning you’ll know which tone to use and what type of language to use. It’ll also save you money! If you do opt to write your copy yourself, don’t make the mistake I see time and time again of using abbreviations and assuming the reader will know what they mean. For example, in the industry of digital marketing, everyone knows what SEO means, but our target customers are business owners. Business owners may have no marketing knowledge at all and will have no idea what SEO means. Do I need a custom built website?

This is a big question. Most people in the web design industry often disagree on how beneficial a custom built website can be over a customised template. The main benefits of a custom built website are the flexibility and personalisation. The website will be specifically tailored to the needs of your business and provide a fully optimised customer journey with your target customer in mind. However, if the purpose of your website is simply to provide information, this does not require a custom built website. For businesses on a budget, most web designers will use a template. The template chosen will be the one that most suits your requirements and will be customised to reflect your branding and personalised to make it look unique. Unless you’re a large enterprise, you don’t really need a custom built website, and you probably wouldn’t be able to afford one either!

Will I be updating the content myself or hiring the developer to make updates?

Obviously it’s cheaper to update the content yourself. However most business owners either won’t have the time or think they don’t have the technical skills required. Actually, despite what most people think, it’s really not that difficult assuming your web designer has used a user-friendly CMS (content management system). If you’re happy to pay for the convenience of hiring the developer to make updates, find out their fees for this before you hire them to build your website. If you want yourself or a member of your team to be able to update it, let the developer know that at the beginning of the project. When the project is complete, ask for some training or a guide on how to update the site. Don’t be put off by the illusion of signing in to edit your website and being faced with a full page of code – this is not how it works. It really can be as simple as selecting the page you want to update, clicking on the text, re-writing it and clicking ‘publish’!
