Digital Marketing for Beginners – Growing Your Business Online in 4 Easy Steps

The BoltBlue team have compiled some top tips for business owners who are completely new to digital marketing. This simple guide is designed to give you the tools you need to begin your digital marketing journey.

1. Quality website
  • Your website needs to be responsive. Meaning the website takes different forms depending on what device your customer is on. If your site is not responsive, contact your web developer! Or even better, contact us…

  • Make sure you install Google Analytics on your website.

  • Closely monitor metrics such as traffic, bounce rate, and non-conversion.

  • Fill your website with quality content, see tips here.

  • Make sure there is a call to action on every page, where relevant.

2. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising
  • Consider your return on investment. How likely is it that someone who clicks on your ad will convert?

  • Define objectives for your campaign. Do you want increased traffic, raised brand awareness, more sales or enquiries?

  • Research keywords customers are searching using keyword planners. Google Keyword Planner is a good tool for this.

  • Optimise your landing page. Make sure the landing page has a clear call to action and relevant information.

  • Create a quality ad. Use keywords, relevant information and a compelling call to action.

  • Monitor metrics such as click-through rate, conversion, cost per click and cost per conversion.

3. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
  • Use keywords and phrases continually throughout your website.

  • Optimise page titles and meta descriptions. If you have a WordPress site, YoastSEO is an excellent, free plugin for this.

  • Optimise content. Make sure your header tags, body content and image alt descriptions all contain keywords.

  • Register your business on business directory sites like Yell.com. The more, the better.

  • Test your website’s SEO score and make the suggested improvements.

  • Use your experience and knowledge of your industry to write useful blog content. Other influencers in your industry may link to your blog and this is great for SEO.

4. Social Media
  • Decide which platforms are best for reaching your target audience. For example, 95% of Instagram users are under 35.

  • Optimise your social media profiles. Use an eye-catching profile picture, fill in the description and link to your website.

  • Add social media buttons to your website.

  • Follow influencers in your industry.

  • Don’t posting anything that’s just text – all posts should include an image, video or link.

  • Stick to the 80/20 rule. 80% of your social media content should be relevant to your industry and only 20% should be talking about your product or service.
